Academic Success: Conquering The Dream Killers

As in any other worthwhile life’s endeavour, the starting point of any successful academic pursuit is a dream. It is the foundation upon which every other success building blocks are laid. Without a dream or a vision (as it may be called) of what is to be achieved clearly defined, efforts will be misdirected, attention will be diverted, energies will be misapplied, time will be wasted, desires will be frustrated and eventually, future will be blank and bleak.

Absolutely, nothing worthwhile and enduring can be achieved without a clear dream.

Dream provides drive, impetus and energies that are directed toward the achievement of a worthwhile endeavour
So, dream is at the root of any life’s achievement. Academic success is a dream every student should possess and lack of it in any student is, to say the least, unthinkable.

However, very deep is the gulf that lies between dreams and their fulfilment. There are many “killers” ambushing every dream or vision, ready to short it down and make it unfulfilled. Unfortunately, many students with great potential for academic excellence and great dreams of success often fall prey of these dream killers and end up as failures in life. We must accept for the fact that there are many dream killers in the highway between the Dreamlands and the Promised Land. These dream killers are factors that militate against the achievement of your dreams of academic success. They are situations, circumstances, occurrences, feelings or lifestyle that conspire against dreams and visions for achievement. They manifest and operate in various dimensions-psychological, physical, social and spiritual.

(a) Psychological dream killers include fear, self-doubt, low self-esteem, depression, frustration, distraction, worry and anxiety, inferiority complex, among others. As abstract as these are, they are extremely pernicious and really harmful to your dreams of academic success.

However, these psychological dream killers can easily be conquered by  applying scriptural principles and practices, such as studying, meditating, believing and depending on the word of God. As a Christian, you must always remember that you seated together with Christ in position of authority dominion and power. Therefore, you need not fear or tremble before anything or anyone. [Ephesians 2:5-6, Romans 5:17]

(b) Physical dream killers are the practical things that if allowed to thrive, can hinder the student success. Physical dream killers include laziness, procrastination, idleness, time wastage and absenteeism from lecturers, indiscipline and the likes. In thus case, willpower, such as determination, discipline and diligence are required to put the student on the ladder. [Proverbs 10:4; 12:24,27]. Laziness is not a Christian virtue and so, it should not be found in our life as a Christian student. Your dream for success should drive you to diligent, productive and determined actions in pursuit of its fulfilment.

Great dreams without productive actions are just mere wishes.

(c) Social dream killers include: peer pressure, ungodly relationships, abuse of social media, getting involved in campus politics, participating in beauty pageant competition, distractions from family or loved ones, unbridled quest for popularity, inability to maintain godly and rewarding relationship with fellow students, to mention but a few.

(d) Spiritual factors account for some mysterious happenings in the student’s academic pursuit that cannot be explained. These are ‘devourers’ that destroy the fruits of the students labour [Malachi 3:11], ‘enemy’ that sow tares among the wheat [Matthew 13: 25, 28] or ‘Balaam’s’ that are employed to curse the blessed children of God [Numbers 22:12]. These spiritual dream killers are responsible for unusual sicknesses -those that usually come only during examinations, cases if missing scripts, undeserved carry-over’s, spiritual attacks, uncommon persecutions or intimidations from lecturers and so on.
Conquering these spiritual foes will demand engaging in prayer warfare. Remember, “…the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of string holds” (2 Corinthians 10:4). With prayer and faith in God, very mountain can be removed.

Never you play ostrich in battles of life, but rather, face the battle with prayer and faith, for victory is sure.

Excellence In Practice: Meet Our Chief Technologist

Meet a renown Chief Technologist in Physiology/biological matters

Born on the 6th of June in the 19th century, Mr. Nsikanabasi Solomon is a veteran in biological matters so far Medical Laboratory Technology is concerned. An indigene of Nsit Local Government Area of Akwa-Ibom, Nigeria, he currently overseas practical session being the Chief Technologist in the department if Physiology in the University of Uyo. He has learnt the art and craft of laboratory matters through the thick and thin during his training. Over the years, he had momentously gathered working experience from various institutions across the length and breadth of Nigeria.

Mr Nsikanabasi started his academic journey after his pre-primary days at Nsit No. 5, Primary School, Obo-Atai in the land of his nativity. He proceeded to Wosley Hall of Correspondence College, Oxford, England obtaining London G.C.E in 1969. Being relentless in his academic pursuit, he went on to get his OND in Biological Sciences at the Premier University of Nigeria (University of Ibadan) and also underwent Laboratory Technology Training programme.
Being a man of great insight and foresight with a singular passion for human health, he went on to get an Advance Certificate in Physiology and Pharmacology of the City and Guide of London Institute in collaboration with the Institute of Science Technology London from 1970 to 1972.

In subsequent years he has been able to get other certificates in reputable institutions cutting across the geographical scope of Nigeria.
From the “About the Author” in his self-written book “Textbook of Practical Physiology” 2nd edition, it us evident that apart from his increase in training and academic qualifications, he is up to brace with the latest in technological advancement which as a result has saw him head various units.

He is proudly the founder of the present National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) formerly ASUTON. He worked with the Department of Human Physiology at the University of Ibadan. He also served as member of the Board of Studies from 1979-1983 at the Federal Polytechnic Bauchi serving as Laboratory head. He further went ahead to University of Jos serving as Chair in practical matters being the Chief Technologist in the department of physiology.

In 1999, returning to his land of nativity, and as the custom had been, it rose within the ranks working as Chief Research Technologist in the Faculty of Pharmacy and moved on to the department of physiology faculty of Basic Medical Science serving as the Chief Technologist in the University of Uyo.

MOTIVATION FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

As students there is a need to change the status quo. There is a need to scrutinize the notions we hold.

Our educational system does not allow students to mask their level of understanding with their attendance to class, their level of effort, or other peripheral issues.

There is a need to go beyond the desire for success to pursuit for excellence.
Conceptually, excellence is performance that exceeds what was previously possible.
Excellence means being better tomorrow than one is today. Anyone desiring excellence must match his practice with his potential and perform at his best. Excellence is not an exception, it is an attitude that must prevail in all who long for it. If you desire to achieve excellence on a large scale, you must develop the habit in the details along the way. There are no accolades for average performance, so whatever you undertake carry it out with excellence. There is no limit to what you can attain with outgoing, continuous progress toward excellence.
There are a host of factors that contribute to academic success. The broad stroke issues that can influence performance in school include:
1. Socioeconomic status
2. Quality and quantity of time spent
3. Degree of physical and mental health
4. Effects of peer relationships
Other things that may influence academic success include self-motivation and meeting of nutritional needs.

Below are letter grade that student earn while in school and there is need to aim for the best.
A means that the student has completed proficient work on all course objectives and advanced work on some objectives
B means the student has completed proficient work on all course objectives
C means the student has completed proficient work on the most important objectives, although not on all objectives. The student can continue to the next course
D means the student has completed proficient work on at least one-half of the course objectives but is missing some important objectives and is at significant risk of failing the next course in the sequence. The student should repeat the course if it is a prerequisite for another course
F means the students had completed proficient work on less than one-half of the course objectives and cannot successfully complete the next course in sequence.

Once again the system don’t allow students to mask their level of understanding with their effort therefore the need to test our knowledge with real life situation.

TACKLING CORRUPTION-UNIUYO SEMINAR

A round table seminar organized by the department of Economics, University of Uyo (uniuyo) tagged “Corruption in Nigeria” has come to an end on 27th of October, 2015 with many opinions proffered in tackling the corruption menace in Nigeria. The event which was championed by Dr Christopher Ekong, Ag. Head Department Economics and Chairman Seminar committee and Prof Imeh Ukpong, Dean Faculty of social science who chairman over the occasion started with the arrival of guest at 11am prompt. The program which featured paper presentation from various intellectuals and the table of academic doctors and professors had to its honour guest appearances outside the university included ICPC chairman,(Represented); Prof Akpan H. Ekpo; Prof Ahaziah who is the Co-coordinator Ritman university, Akwa-Ibom and host of others. Present at the occasion were Prof. Comfort Ekpo, Vice chancellor uniuyo (represented), Head of Departments, Deans, post graduate students, and the general uniuyo community students. During the paper presentation, questions such as what corruption is, causes and possible remedy were raised and tackled as every speaker had various angles to the topic ranging from Economic approach, structural and religious position, etc.
According to Prof Joe U. Umo who is from the department of Economic a uniuyo stated that corruption is at the core of the economy touching on scare resources with his Marshallian theory of demand and supply with
blunt edges to attain an equilibrium. Indicating that corruption is both historical and contextual, siting that economic meltdown as one of the cause of corruption. He furthermore highlighted the engine room of corruption to be poverty, unemployment which can be battled head to head by mass quality education, infrastructure, high productivity coupled with high wages stressing that corruption can be limited with strong laws. Concluding his presentation on corruption, he stated that the war on corruption is a titanic fight and the real war is on the economy. One notable speaker at the event was Prof Ahaziah Umanah who is the coordinator Ritman University brought his wealth of experience in religious matters to the fore as his submission on corruption was religious
based. Dressed in his religious attire representing the Catholic faith started by saying he is a social deviant and that corruption is ubiquitous. He defined corruption as “a social process within which human beings grow from good to bad”. He also hinted that corruption is behavioral retrogression. Highlighting major sector areas affected by corruption such as institution, family, politics, education, etc buttressing his point on corruption as ubiquitous.
As part of his submission on the remedy for corruption, he stressed the need for honesty, truth, morality and shame culture, i.e., the shameful feelings after an evil act has been committed, back in the society starting from the individual. Various contributions indicated that corruption as the abuse of power for personal gain which in the long run leads to ineffectiveness of the system, leads to frustration, inefficient activities. Submissions which was voiced by Prof Edet Akpakpan, department of Economics stated that deregulation polices as adopted by world bank could be used as well, self-disciple and courage to fight corruption should be imbibed by individuals while political will, dealing with real economic challenges and checkmating of agencies should be adopted by government parastatals. The Vice-Chancellor (represented) added that if corruption is evil, let’s fight cheap money since money is the root of all evil and leaders most show example. To round-up the event, questions were raised and answered appropriately and prayers were offered to God to close the occasion.

DEVELOPING ANALYTICAL SKILL 1

Attended a Success Summit organized by my local church and one of the seminars buttress the need of developing our analytical skill. Emphasis drawn for Daniel 1 vs 4, 20; 5vs12-14, the reader will notice the distinguishing factor between Daniel and other young men who were to serve in the palace.
Briefly, they are Skillful in all wisdom, Cunning in understanding science, i.e, being analytical and providing solution to man’s problems, they had excellent spirit, knowledge and understanding. Furthermore, they had the ability to dissolve hard sentences and doubt.
We all will agreed that they had the God factor, yet they worked on their skill. You’ll remember that Daniel said he understood the times because he had read the prophecies of Jeremiah, that proofs the point that being studious would help develop your reasoning ability. In Isaiah 41v21 we are told to bring forth Strong Reasons. Thinking will sharpen us analytically. That’s where we probe the secrets of nature.
